When considering works by Sam Moyer, one typically thinks of her works from 2010 and up to 2013.

There are how ever some works from the period 2008-2009 that are also very interesting.

Sam started making the moving blanket works in 2008 and has continued revisiting the material throughout the Greater New York Show and after. She showed a really gritty blanket triptych at PS1.

They follow the same structure as the bleached canvas works and instinctually follow the line with a clear horizon/cropping, folding, and also referencing the tradition of the readymade and the monochrome.

The scale and pattern of the blankets also relate to Sam’s love of Agnes Martin’s paintings and the play of pattern that emerges in these readymade forms.

Sam Moyer – Openings in 2013 – Brussels

Sam Moyer will be in a group show in Brussels in November 2013 at Galerie Rodolphe Janssen.

“In her new body of work titled Breakers II, Sam Moyer works in a very sculptural physical way by overlapping painted glass and dyed canvas, combining abstraction and readymade while still loosely referencing the idea of landscape. The glass and the canvas are layered to create compositions physically reliant on the Neilsen frames that hold them together. Altough the techniques Sam Moyer is using in her work (glass painting, canvas dying,…) could be considered to be more in the field of craft, Moyer’s work manages to delude the viewers into thinking that they are looking at a traditional abstract painting. There is also a deceptive quality to the material, just like in Drescher’s work. You think you know what you are looking at until further inspection, then you realize their works are not what they appear.”

“With his most recent body of work – a series of sparse abstract paintings composed entirely of self-produced canvas – New York-based artist Ethan Cook makes a strong contribution to this tradition. Cook is one of a growing number of young artists whose eagerness to advance the conversation of painting has led them to develop conceptually driven, process-based practices encompassing a wide range of materials and techniques from both within and without art historical convention. For these painters, assimilating outside vocabularies represents a means to an end, a vehicle for challenging the perceptions and presumptions surrounding their chosen medium. In Cook’s case, an unswerving interest in the constituent elements of painting – the support, the frame, and particularly the canvas – has, in recent years, been translated through numerous methods culled from traditional textile design. Keen to find aesthetic potential in overlooked materials, he uses these tools literally but thoughtfully, producing work rich in both historical reference and visual reward.”

“Ethan Cook is a Brooklyn based artist, working within the history of ‘painting’ but with none of the paint. Instead, Cook creates his pared down compositions from canvas alone. The outcome is seen in austere yet compelling works that challenge the picture plane by turning the surface into the painting. His work has developed through various series, all of which utilize and transform different aspects of the material. His most recent works, photographed by Clement Pascal, are made from pieces of different colored canvas, which he weaves himself. I met Cook at his Greenpoint studio on a sunny morning to talk about the history of canvas, the craft of weaving with mistakes, and his unique approach to making art.”

Some might say that – in a way Sergej Jensen and Ethan Cook’s works are close, but the main difference in their practices is that Ethan hand-loomed himself the canvases on an old machine.

Also, while Jensen applies the painting on the canvas, Cook uses it by dyeing the cotton threads one by one. Canvas in his case comes to the fore. The very weave structure of the canvas become a tactile, sculptural element. Using materials upon which painting is built, Ethan Cook plays the role of the artist / painter as well as the skilled laborer whose craftsmanship is not always appreciated as an art form, skirting the line between fine art and traditional craft.
